Consumerism.
Don't worry I'm not going to get preachy, and if I come across that way, I'm preaching to myself. Today we went to Goodwill to buy some pants for Andy. You walk in and it's like a Walmart. Globes, frames, toys, clothes, bedding, furniture.... and the list goes on. It just made me feel downright bad. Why do I buy new? Is it because I can afford it? Possibly. Does it smell better, newer, cleaner? Definitely. Or is it some hidden thrill I get when I buy something brand new? Probably. Jesus talking to the rich man wraps it up in Luke 18 by saying, 22 'And when Jesus heard this He said to him, "One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess, and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in Heaven; and come follow me."
I know for a fact for me personally, stuff (attachments to earthly pleasures) can make the following Christ part harder. Christ, and the men and women closely attached to Him during His time on earth, had rough roads. Constantly moving, hated, beaten, imprisoned, torture and many became martyrs for the radical savior that they served with all their hearts. Am I doing the same? Absolutely not. I back down if I think I'll be corrected at times. It's funny that a trip to Goodwill brought on all these thoughts, but I'm so thankful they did. I need to be reminded that I'm not in this faith for life, liberty and the pursuit of my happiness. I'm in it for sacrifice, eternal liberty of souls, and the pursuit of Heaven.
Luke 9:24, "For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it."

well said, and a good reminder. however, living in a "depressed" area as we do, trips to Goodwill aren't always quite so fruitful. is it weird to wish for a better goodwill store with lots more selection? (not to take away from what you are saying, though. i do understand and agree.)
Emily-
Thanks for this post. I struggle with the same things. Thank God for husbands who insist on used pants! Next time you're heading to Chicago, let me know, I've come across some really incredible second-hand shops.
